Mediterranean Sea, total area of this sea is 2,509,000 square kilometer. Its maximum depth is 5,150 meters; average depth is 1,501 meters; and total length 3,900 kilometer. Mediterranean is almost entirely surrounded by land. The coasts of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa that border the Mediterranean reap the benefits of its scenic beauty, rich coastal plains, and mild, sunny climate 

The Mediterranean is generally shallow, with an average depth of 1,501 meters (4,926 feet). An undersea ridge stretching from Tunisia to Sicily divides the Mediterranean into eastern and basins another seafloor ridge, between Spain and Morocco, lies at the sea's outlet to the Atlantic Ocean. The narrow Strait of Gibraltar is also extremely shallow, restricting circulation and greatly reducing the tidal range of the sea. These factors, coupled with the high rate of evaporation, make the Mediterranean considerably saltier than the Atlantic. For the countries of the farmer Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), the Mediterranean is of great political important as a maritime outlet by way of the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, the Dardanelle's, and the Black Sea.
