Why do we bring out hand close to mount while shouting to somebody at a distance?

We always bring out hands close to mount while shouting because by bringing the hands close to the mouth, the sound energy is not allowed to spread in different directions and we make it unidirectional. By doing this we are able to produce loud sound.
