This occurs due to scattering of light by small particles of dust & smoke near the surface of the earth. At the time of sunset and sunrise light rays have to cover a travel of greater distance. Soduring their travel dust & smoke scatters all others colors of light except red & red light rays travel unhindered & reach to use, that is why sun appears red.
